Neutrophil phagocytosing B. anthracis

(V. Brinkmann, MPIIB)

The immune system is the dynamic process by which a living organism recognizes itself, remembers its encounters, and maintains its integrity within the world.

Rather than merely defending the body, the immune system interprets and negotiates its relationship with the environment. It decides when to tolerate, cooperate, repair, or destroy. These decisions happen millions of times per day. When the system fails multiple diseases might occur.

Underlying immune activity is a dynamic chemical framework in which cellular metabolism and redox signaling regulate how immune cells sense, communicate, and act.
